On the back of the Incarceration Issue, the special edition exploring Australia’s complicated relationship with imprisonment, VICE Australia recently won the ‘Multi Channel Brand of the Year’ at the 2015 Publish Awards. VICE has made its name in the media landscape by embracing new formats – but never before have we challenged ourselves to dedicate our company resources and channels to a single issue, delivered across every platform on such a scale. The issue was realised across multiple formats: a print magazine; an online edition featuring additional content; a video documentary series; and a live event panel featuring industry experts.

We also won silver for ‘Content Company of the Year’, and bronze for ‘Best Use of Craft’ for Holden Car vs Drones, a video made in collaboration with Holden, and directed by veteran of the global design community— Bradley “GMUNK” Munkowitz. The video, which was also used as a television ad for the Holden Astra, sees a slick black vehicle caged in a warehouse, pitted against a swarm of drones setting a moving obstacle course.

 

VICELAND

VICE recently announced the launch of a 24-hour TV network, VICELAND—featuring hundreds of hours of new programming. The launch gained a mass of press coverage – including The New York Times, The Financial Times, USA Today, Mashable, Adweek, Wired and The Wall Street Journal.

Spike Jonze has been working with us on the new channel and he said it best: “It feels like most channels are just a collection of shows. We wanted VICELAND to be different, to feel like everything on there has a reason to exist and a strong point of view.”

 

Movember

We recently partnered with global men’s health foundation charity, the Movember Foundation, to make How to Make Friends as a Grown-Ass Man—a study of friendship, awkwardness and self-improvement.

In ‘How to Make Friends As a Grown-Ass Man’, we follow VICE host Micah Greenwood as he gives making new friends a go. Putting aside his trepidation, and any lingering ‘masculine’ hang-ups, he embarks on a series of typical activities, including football training and a whiskey appreciation class, as well as a not-so-typical one — speed dating.

 

THUMP RAVE DAYS

VICE Australia recently made a long-form documentary—Rave Days: The Birth of Melbourne’s Rave Scene, exploring Melbourne’s explosive rave scene in the 90s.

The documentary utilized all original footage and music from 1990-99, and sees Thump meet with the pioneers and personalities behind Melbourne’s often underrated and unexplored rave scene of the 90s—including renowned artists Braden Schlager and Ollie Olsen.

 

LYNX PITCH BLACK

On October 30, in partnership with LYNX, Sydney’s Seymour Centre Everest Theatre hosted a special one-off performance from electronic pop trio Seekae.

After a quick security briefing, the house lights were turned off leaving band and 300-strong audience in complete darkness. Sensory deprivation turned into sensory overload with UV bubbles falling over the audience, and strobes illuminating Seekae’s 30-minute set.

The mind-bending performance was captured by director Chris Hill (Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernauts, Architecture In Helsinki), for a special tech-led feature video that will be released through Noisey.com.

VIRTUE, SONY AUSTRALIA, AND UNKO UNVEIL SOCIAL VIDEO SERIES

Virtue, VICE’s in-house creative agency, have worked with production company unko and Sony Australia on a collection of six-and-a-half-second shorts skewering everyday truisms of technology’s place in modern day life. The eight videos—purpose-made for Vine, Facebook, and Instagram—feature a selection of Sony product in situ.

Featuring strangers connecting across the dancefloor, a BMX rider blowing up his laptop through a radness overload, and a pair of headphones for your nose, the series will run across Sony Australia’s social media, with support from VICE’s media network and a dedicated media buy.

To launch Holden’s new Astra, VICE produced “Car Vs Drones”, a unique collaboration with The Creators Project that included a long form feature and broadcast television commercial.

In the film directed by GMUNK (AKA Bradley G Munkowitz), an Astra goes head to head with a swarm of custom-built drones in a battle of speed, technology, and skill.

Alongside a major ATL campaign by Carat, the campaign is being supported across the VICE media network, taking in leading sites VICE.com, VICE News, Motherboard, Munchies, i-D, Concrete Playground, High Snobiety, Hypebeast, D’Marge and VICE’s YouTube channels. The campaign incorporates a suite of premium video formats designed in-house by VICE, including full bleed video billboards and video skins with lightbox, as well as pre-rolls, editorial and social activation.

“We are taking the Holden brand into new territory and challenging the status quo,” said Holden Executive Director of Marketing & Customer Experience, Geraldine Davys.

“Holden is going to continue to produce engaging and innovative content for our customers, content that traditionally may not be associated with the Holden brand. Astra vs Drones is perfect example of this; it’s a short film that certainly makes you sit up and take notice.”
